Stronghold: Crusader Review

The original Stronghold had two parts, a castle builder, and a strategy game component. If you have not played the original Stronghold, you should try that first. Im my opinion it was much more fun. This game is just like the original except it is all about battle. It is not an expansion so you do not need the original to play. It was in my mind created to tap the market of gamers who already played the original and wanted more.

It is essentially a long series of battle scenarios that get progressively more difficult. However, do not think there is a fantastic AI to this game. It never really had one. This game introduces some new unit types. Each opponent you battle will have its own unit preference so you will get an opportunity to see how the computer uses all the new unit types.

I admit I enjoyed playing it. My favorite strategy centered around the new horse archers. A brute force method for sure where I build up a large component of these and then set them to move back and forth between two waypoints, attacking a castle. Just be aware that when a group stops at a waypoint, it will not move again till all stragglers have caught up. This gives the opponent time to kill them. Large groups can suffer from this if you are not careful.

My youngest daughter (12) likes the new assassin unit. She used it to defeat one of the scenarios I could not. How could I know she had the makings of a little general.

If you are a Stronghold fan, you will likely enjoy this battle addition. If not, try the original first. The economic games of the original add depth to the gameplay. This game is now many years old so do not expect fancy graphics although the graphics were quite nice in their day and are still palattable. The good news is there will be no miminum requirements you have to worry about.

Hail Flavius!
